This esteemed recognition is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the town and its local community, often in a voluntary capacity. The remarkable contributions from those considered, have undoubtedly surpassed many others, making them deserving candidates for this honour.

 

In recognition of their longstanding commitment and invaluable service to our community, Houghton Regis Town Council is pleased to announce that it was unanimously agreed to bestow this honour upon Jenny Gallucci, Roger Turner & Keith Wallis.  Here is why:

 

 

Jenny Gallucci received the Honorary Freeman award in recognition of her remarkable contributions to the Houghton Regis community. A long-time resident, Jenny has been the driving force behind the voluntary efforts in the town. Over a decade ago, she and other community members established Houghton Regis Helpers, a voluntary group that assists residents with tasks such as shopping, gardening, hospital visits, prescription collection, and various odd jobs. Under Jenny's leadership, the group has flourished, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when it became a vital lifeline for many.

In November 2023, Houghton Regis Helpers received the prestigious King's Voluntary Award from King Charles III, the highest honor for a community group, equivalent to an MBE. This recognition, which involves rigorous scrutiny, underscores the group's significant impact. The community of Houghton Regis takes great pride in this achievement, and it is fitting that Jenny, the driving force behind the group, be honored with the Honorary Freemanship of the Town.

 

Keith Wallis received the Honorary Freeman award for his lifelong dedication and contributions to the Houghton Regis community. A native resident and member of the Houghton Regis Baptist Church, Keith's education at Thomas Whitehead School and Kingsbury School in Dunstable laid the foundation for his multifaceted talents as a poet, writer, photographer, and musician. Keith has been a cornerstone of the town, with his involvement spanning various aspects of community life. His musical talents, especially with Last of the Ukuleles, brought joy and engagement to the community, particularly during the challenging days of the COVID lockdowns. Keith's enduring commitment and artistic contributions have made him a cherished figure in Houghton Regis, meriting the Honorary Freemanship of the Town.

 

The presentations took place today, Wednesday 14th August at the Farmstead Building in Linmere, and the awards were presented by the Town Mayor, Councillor Elaine Cooper.
